The fall 2009 issue of local magazine, Carolina Home & Garden, features Flat Rock in the Neighborhood Watch section (pages 64 – 69).   Not only will you see the smiling face of Starr Teel outside Hubba Hubba but his wife and a daughter (Virginia and Virginia Frances, respectively) and neighbors David Voorhees of Hand in Hand Gallery, David Brannock of The Back Room and Jon Nilsson of Charleston Garden Condominiums are also showcased.

The article gives a brief overview of what makes Flat Rock special and what to see and do while in town.  Pick up a copy around town or read excerpts from the article online.  Plan a trip to Flat Rock soon and take in all the sights, sounds and flavors our area has to offer.

The 1st Annual Future Legends of BBQ Competition is heating up.  With close to 20 registrants already on board, this looks to be a great first-year event.    The competition isn’t the only thing that has Flat Rock licking its chops, however.  There’s also the Pre-Event Reception and the annual Camp for All Barbeque Ball.

Pre-Event Reception

Hubba Hubba Smokehouse hosts this pre-event kick-off with an evening of music, food, wine and beer and, of course, special guests.  Meet BBQ Legend Mike Mills, author Amy Mills, Carolyn Wells (President of the Kansas City Barbeque Society – KCBS), Tommy Houston (The Checkered Pig), and Jim Tabb (Founder of the Blue Ridge BBQ Festival in Tryon).  This event runs from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and you must R.S.V.P. by October 7th.  Please call (828)697-2000 for further information.

Camp for All Barbeque Ball

Join other contributors at the Barbeque Ball to support leadership development of Henderson County’s youth – Saturday, October 10 at Camp Greystone – immediately following the Future Legends competition.

4:30 – 6:00 p.m.     Beer/Wine reception and silent auction for adults.  Face-painting, inflatables and other activities for children

6:00 – 7:30 p.m.    Barbeque supper with live music

7:30 – 9:00 p.m.     Square dancing with Whitewater Bluegrass Company and S’mores

Contributions:  $100/Family (up to 4 people.  $25 each additional);   $75/Couple;    $50 Individual   Must R.S.V.P. to (828)697-2000

Henderson County Habitat for Humanity will hold it’s first-ever fundraiser ball , The Carpenter’s Ball, on Saturday, September 12th at 6pm behind Little Rainbow Row in Flat Rock.

Cost of tickets is $50 per person ($90/couple) and includes a gourmet dinner served by Hubba Hubba Smokehouse, complimentary beer and wine and entertainment by Almost There Quartet – An Asheville based band that performs a variety of music including jazz standards, R&B, funk, and original compositions.   There will also be specialty auction items up for bid. This is a signature event for the affiliate and participation is encouraged. Success is vital to bring in much needed funds to the Habitat for Humanity organization!

Changing Lives One House at a Time

Henderson County Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing in Henderson County.  Incorporated in 1989, Habitat has now completed 100 homes with a goal of 12 homes per year.  More than 20% of all households do not live in safe, affordable housing, with 44% of WNC jobs not paying enough to enable a family to rent a 2-bedroom apartment.  Through this fundraiser, Habitat desires to greatly improve those statistics in our community.
Together, we can do it!!

Celebrate Flat Rock attendees enjoy Hubba Hubba BBQ and demos

David Voorhees with Hand in Hand Gallery demonstrates Raku Pottery

Flat Rock was the star over the weekend as part of the Celebrate Flat Rock festivities. There was free ice cream at Flat Rock Village Hall, music on the square, raku pottery demos in the parking lot beside Hubba Hubba all capped off with a Chuck Brodsky performance on the back deck of Little Rainbow Row. Hubba Hubba and Flat Rock Village Bakery donated baked goods which were sold to raise money to fund the final performance for the Summer Concert Series held the first Saturday evening of the month through October 3. Volunteers from the Flat Rock Merchants Association sold hot dogs to raise money to purchase Christmas items for families in need later this year. Check out the fun!
